Black & White Photography

I have always been drawn to black and white photographs, since color film did not exist when I first began using a camera. Also, as an inner-directed person, I am very interested in the essence of things, rather than merely their outer manifestation.

This kind of photography can be very challenging, however, because tonal range and contrast are even more important. The images show nature, places, events, and people stripped down to the very core.

Selecting photographs for bw conversion means looking for the stark essence of what is captured. There are no colors to distract from the deeper truths expressed.

Prior to digital photography, shooting b&w either meant having to forego color, or carry two camera bodies. Now it is possible to have both options for each image. What a world of difference that makes!
